Wesley Wayne Hunter Jr, Record Tampering, Oklahoma 2024

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – Former Canadian County Sheriff’s Deputy Wesley Wayne Hunter, Jr., 28, of Yukon, has pleaded guilty to destroying, altering, or falsifying records in a federal investigation. This revelation comes after an intensive probe by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The government’s superseding indictment accused Hunter of purposefully deactivating the mobile tracking system on his work phone while on duty on July 20, 2023. The incident occurred while he was transporting a female pretrial detainee from Bryan County to Canadian County. According to Hunter’s plea, he intentionally altered his official record by pulling off the transport route to conceal any potential investigation into his subsequent criminal misconduct.

Presided over by Honorable John Russell, U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Oklahoma, the hearing took place in Muskogee. Hunter remains in custody of the U.S. Marshal while awaiting a presentence investigation.

The prosecution was represented by Assistant United States Attorneys Nicole Paladino and Richard Lorenz, with Trial Attorney Laura Gilson from the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division providing consultation. The charges against Hunter stem from his actions on duty, which have garnered significant attention in Oklahoma’s law enforcement community.

With this plea, Hunter faces serious consequences for his actions within the criminal justice system. His guilty plea underscores the severity of the charge and the ongoing efforts by federal agencies to ensure transparency and accountability among law enforcement officials.
