Shields Sentenced for Prison Assault
WILKES-BARRE – In a shocking display of violence behind bars, Brandon Shields, a 33-year-old former Philadelphia resident and current inmate at the United States Penitentiary at Canaan (USP Canaan), pleaded guilty to assaulting another inmate with a homemade weapon.
According to United States Attorney David J. Freed, the assault occurred on January 7, 2016, when Shields, armed with a combination lock attached to a length of cloth, attacked another inmate. Shields was subsequently indicted by a grand jury in March 2016.
Shields’ sentence is a grim reminder of the dangers that lurk within the prison system. The 110-month sentence he is currently serving for several bank robberies he committed in Philadelphia in 2011 and 2012 will now be compounded by an additional five years in prison, courtesy of U.S. District Court Senior Judge A. Richard Caputo.
The investigation into Shields’ actions was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Service. Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara prosecuted the case.
