Shiprock Man Charged in Brutal Stabbing Murder
An 18-year-old man from Shiprock, New Mexico has been charged with murder in Indian Country, authorities announced today.
Tavor Tom, 18, allegedly committed the offense on July 1, 2019, according to a criminal complaint. The victim, whose name has not been released, was stabbed repeatedly with a knife at her home, and later died at the scene.
According to the complaint, Tom then stole the victim’s automobile and fled the residence, eventually crashing the vehicle. He was arrested by the FBI on July 5, 2019, after a short investigation.
The FBI, along with the Navajo Nation Criminal Investigation Section and the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office, investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph M. Spindle is prosecuting the case.
Tom appeared in federal court today for a detention hearing, where the judge ordered him to remain in custody pending trial. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.
A criminal complaint is only an allegation, and Tom is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
The brutal stabbing has left the community shaken, and authorities are working to ensure that justice is served.
