Larence Cambridge, Drive-By Shooting, New Mexico 2025

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Justice, however delayed, came down hard on Larence Cambridge, 35, of Shiprock, New Mexico, today. Cambridge was sentenced to 102 months – 8.5 years – in federal prison for a brazen drive-by shooting that left one victim seriously wounded. The incident, a cold demonstration of violence, occurred on January 9, 2025, along a stretch of U.S. Highway 64 near Shiprock.

According to court documents unsealed today, Cambridge, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, wasn’t just a bystander. He was actively participating in the violence. While a passenger in a vehicle, he unleashed multiple shots at another car carrying two unsuspecting victims. The bullets ripped into the vehicle, causing serious injuries to one of the occupants before Cambridge and his companions callously fled the scene, leaving a trail of chaos and pain.

This wasn’t a random act. While the motive remains unclear, the calculated nature of the attack points to a deliberate attempt to inflict harm. The federal system offers no easy out for Cambridge; there is no parole. He will serve the entirety of his sentence, a significant stretch behind bars intended to reflect the severity of his actions and protect the public.

U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison, speaking today, emphasized the seriousness of the crime and the commitment of his office to pursuing justice in cases like this. “This sentence sends a clear message: violent acts will not be tolerated, especially those that endanger innocent lives,” Ellison stated. Philip Russell, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, echoed that sentiment, highlighting the collaborative effort that brought Cambridge to justice.

The investigation, led by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office with crucial assistance from the Navajo Police Department and the Department of Criminal Investigations, pieced together the events of that January day. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark A. Probasco skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring Cambridge was held accountable for his actions. Upon release from prison, Cambridge will face an additional five years of supervised release and is ordered to pay over $13,000 in restitution to cover the victim’s medical expenses and other losses.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the persistent violence that plagues some corners of New Mexico. While the sentence offers a measure of closure for the victim and their family, it also underscores the ongoing need for vigilance and proactive law enforcement to keep our highways – and our communities – safe. Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and report on the fallout from this brutal attack.
