Rose Marie Jackson, Social Security Benefits Theft, Louisiana 2015

SHREVEPORT, La.  – A brazen case of Social Security benefits theft has come to a close in Shreveport, as 78-year-old Rose Marie Jackson pleaded guilty to stealing over $200,000 in benefits meant for her late husband.

According to court records, Jackson received $206,891 in Social Security benefits from March of 1986 to January of 2015, despite being ineligible for them. Her husband, Thomas Jackson, passed away in 1986, but the Social Security Administration continued to send checks to a shared post office box. Rose Jackson, rather than alerting the agency to her husband’s death, chose to cash the checks, signing them with her late husband’s name.

The scheme went undetected for nearly three decades, with the Social Security Administration unaware of Thomas Jackson’s passing. However, an investigation by the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General exposed the truth, leading to Jackson’s guilty plea.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon B. Brown. Jackson faces up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and restitution. Her sentencing is set for September 8, 2016.

While the motives behind Jackson’s actions are unclear, one thing is certain: she has committed a serious crime that has left a trail of financial devastation in her wake. As the case moves forward, it serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and the consequences of stealing from the government.
