Sidney Flerme, Fentanyl & Gun Trafficking, Florida 2024

MIAMI, FL – Sidney Arnel Flerme, 31, of Boynton Beach, Florida, is headed to federal prison for nearly two decades after being sentenced to 220 months, followed by five years of supervised release, for a multi-faceted federal crime. Flerme was convicted of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of his drug trafficking operation.

The bust went down September 15, 2022, when law enforcement executed a search warrant at Flerme’s residence. Cops spotted Flerme leaving the house and, upon noticing their presence, he tossed a plastic bag onto the ground. That bag contained approximately 26 capsules of fentanyl. The real stash was inside – nearly 300 grams of fentanyl, along with multiple zip-lock bags filled with the deadly opioid, digital scales, empty capsules, and a blender coated in fentanyl residue. But that wasn’t all.

On top of the kitchen counter, practically nestled amongst the drugs, was a loaded semi-automatic pistol. The presence of the firearm added significant weight to the charges, illustrating the dangerous combination of drugs and weaponry that law enforcement is battling on the streets. Flerme, already a convicted felon, had no legal right to possess the gun.

The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Miami Field Division and the Boynton Beach Police Department (BBPD). ATF Special Agent in Charge Christopher A. Robinson and BBPD Chief Joseph DeGiulio jointly announced the sentencing alongside U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe for the Southern District of Florida. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Ralston led the prosecution, with assistance from Emily Stone and Mitchell Hyman on asset forfeiture.

Prosecutors highlighted that this case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened PSN strategy in May 2021, focusing on building trust, supporting community organizations, and strategically prioritizing enforcement.

Court documents related to the case, including case number 23-cr-80001, are publicly available on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida website at www.flsd.uscourts.gov and http://pacer.flsd.uscourts.gov. Flerme’s lengthy sentence sends a clear message that federal authorities are aggressively targeting those who profit from the deadly fentanyl trade and illegally possess firearms.
