BROOKLYN – The grimy halls of justice were abuzz today as Ismael Zambada Garcia, alias El Mayo, the 75-year-old co-founder of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, entered a guilty plea in federal court. El Mayo faces life imprisonment after admitting his role in one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in history.
“This foreign terrorist committed horrific crimes against the American people,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi declared. “He will now pay for those crimes by spending the rest of his life behind bars in an American prison.”
Zambada Garcia’s reign of terror has officially come to an end, according to U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones for the Southern District of Florida (SDFL). “With his conviction, his reign of violence and terror is over,” Reding Quiñones said.
The Sinaloa Cartel’s operations were built on the importing of poisonous drugs into the United States, with billions of dollars in profits from cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, and methamphetamine. The Justice Department’s Criminal Division has been relentless in its pursuit to dismantle such criminal organizations, with Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew R. Galeotti emphasizing that El Mayo’s conviction is a significant milestone.
FBI Director Kash Patel echoed the sentiment of relentless pursuit, stating that their work does not end here and will continue to thwart the Sinaloa Cartel and put an end to its operations. The DEA’s Administrator Terrance Cole emphasized that no cartel boss is beyond the reach of justice.
This victory against El Mayo Zambada Garcia marks a crucial step in dismantling the Sinaloa Cartel, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York securing a superseding indictment last year. With El Mayo’s conviction, the United States has once again proven its resolve to hold drug traffickers accountable.
