SIOUX FALLS – In a brutal turn of events, Quincy Lamar Johnson, 35, from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was sentenced to serve over four years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on August 18, 2025, also includes three years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Judge Schreier found Johnson guilty after he pleaded guilty on May 5, 2025, following his arrest in February 2025 for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. The case took an unexpected turn when Johnson was involved in a severe motor vehicle accident in Sioux Falls in July 2024, leading to his hospitalization. During the rescue, officers discovered two 9mm pistols on the floorboard of his car. Johnson had been prohibited from possessing firearms due to prior felony convictions for aggravated assault, assault with a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a felon/addict in Georgia.
U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell praised the collaboration between the Sioux Falls Police Department and federal law enforcement, stating, ‘This case and others like it showcase our effective partnership in interrupting violence in our community by removing illegal firearms from our neighborhoods and holding violent offenders accountable in federal court.’
The investigation into Johnson’s possession of the firearms was a joint effort between the Sioux Falls Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Joyce prosecuted the case, ensuring justice for the victims and the community.
Johnson has been immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin his sentence, which serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who flout gun laws and endanger public safety.
