Sioux Falls Man Sentenced for Marijuana Possession
On March 25, 2013, a Sioux Falls man was sentenced to 15 months of imprisonment and two years of supervised release for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
According to court documents, Ryan Scott, 26, was found with over one pound of marijuana after his vehicle went into the ditch on February 25, 2011. Deputies responded to the scene and discovered the marijuana in a bag during a search of the vehicle.
Scott was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 18, 2012, and pleaded guilty to the indictment on January 25, 2013. He was subsequently sentenced by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Mellette County Sheriff’s Office and the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force.
As part of his sentence, Scott was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund. He was also turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal Service immediately following his sentencing.
The incident highlights the ongoing efforts to combat narcotics trafficking in the region. As more cases come to light, law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to keep communities safe from the dangers of illicit substances.
