Halie Sletten, Distribution of a Controlled Substance Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, South Dakota 2021

HALIE SLETEN, the 43-year-old woman from Sioux Falls, was handed a staggering 20-year federal prison sentence this week for distributing fentanyl and heroin, which led to a deadly overdose. United States Attorney Dennis R. Holmes announced that District Court Judge Karen E. Schreier imposed the harsh penalty on November 4, 2021.

Sletten, who pleaded guilty to Distribution of a Controlled Substance Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury back in August, was also ordered to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and face an additional three years of supervised release upon her release from prison.

The fateful distribution took place on January 17, 2020, when Sletten intentionally supplied Victim #1 with a lethal mix of fentanyl and heroin. The substances caused an immediate overdose, putting Victim #1’s life at grave risk. Thanks to quick medical intervention, the victim survived after being administered two doses of Narcan by paramedics.

Acting U.S. Attorney Holmes emphasized that Sletten’s actions not only endangered the victim but also put countless other lives in danger. ‘This sentence underscores the severe consequences of distributing illegal substances like fentanyl and heroin,’ Holmes stated.

The investigation into Sletten’s crime was a collaborative effort by the Brandon Police Department, Sioux Falls Police Department, Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Hodges handled the prosecution of the case with vigor.

After her sentencing, Sletten was promptly turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, ensuring she would serve her time without delay.
