Columbia, South Carolina – In a shocking case of identity theft, six individuals who are in the country illegally have pleaded guilty to using false Social Security numbers to acquire health insurance, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina.
The six defendants, all of whom are from Honduras and Guatemala, entered guilty pleas before District Judge Donald C. Coggins, Jr., in Spartanburg, South Carolina. They are Luis Alberto Isaguirre-Cortes, Jose Santos Martinez, Noe De La Cruz Galvez-Munguia, Fredin Orlando Cordon-Gonzalez, Julio Cesar Rojas Vasquez, and Josue Eduardo Maas-Aparicio.
Each defendant faces a possible sentence of up to five years in prison. Sentencing will occur after the preparation of a Presentence Report by the U.S. Probation Office.
The investigation, which was conducted by agents from the Department of Labor, Department of Transportation, and ICE-Homeland Security Investigations, revealed that the defendants were working under false Social Security numbers and had applied for and received health insurance using these numbers.
Assistant U.S. Attorney David C. Stephens advised the court that the defendants are cooperating with the government regarding their employment and use of false Social Security numbers.
U.S. Attorney Sherri A. Lydon commended the agents involved in the investigation for their hard work and close cooperation. ‘This case demonstrates our commitment to protecting the integrity of our social security system and holding accountable those who would seek to exploit it,’ she said.
The case against the six defendants is a stark reminder of the ongoing problem of identity theft and the importance of maintaining the integrity of our social security system.
