Darryl Sumler, Fentanyl Conspiracy, Louisiana 2024

New Orleans, LA – In a stunning blow against the illicit drug trade in Louisiana, Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced today that Darryl Sumler, 61, of Slidell, Darryl Goodman, 47, of New Orleans, and Jason Slaughter, 33, of Bogalusa have been hit with a seven-count federal indictment for violations of the Controlled Substances Act.

The trio is accused of conspiring to distribute and possess fentanyl with intent to sell it throughout the Eastern District of Louisiana. Sumler, Goodman, and Slaughter face substantial penalties, including up to 40 years imprisonment, millions in fines, and mandatory supervised release if convicted.

Sumler was additionally charged with four counts of distributing large quantities of fentanyl, while Goodman faces charges for a separate distribution offense. Slaughter is charged with possessing the substance with intent to distribute. All three men are required to pay a $100 special assessment fee per count.

The investigation leading to the indictment was part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at dismantling cartels and protecting communities from violent crime. The Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, Slidell Police Department, and Louisiana State Police all played crucial roles in this case.

Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson emphasized that an indictment is merely a charge, and the prosecution team, led by Assistant United States Attorney Lauren Sarver, will work tirelessly to prove the guilt of the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt.
