Sloane Signal-Debose, Misappropriation by Veteran’s Fiduciary, Louisiana 2018

New Orleans, Louisiana – In a shocking case of financial exploitation, Sloane Signal-Debose, a 51-year-old resident of Slidell, has pleaded guilty to misappropriating over $100,000 from a veteran’s funds while serving as his fiduciary.

According to court documents, Signal-Debose took control of the veteran’s finances and bank accounts from 2016 to 2018, using the funds to pay for her own expenses, including a down payment on a home in her own name. She also used the veteran’s funds to pay contractors working on her home, submitting false records to the Department of Veteran’s Affairs to conceal her actions.

Signal-Debose faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release after her release from prison, a fine of up to $250,000 or twice the gross gain to Signal-Debose or the gross loss to any victims, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee. Judge Sarah S. Vance has scheduled her sentencing hearing for February 15, 2023.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General, which investigated the case. Assistant United States Attorney Nicholas D. Moses is in charge of the prosecution.

The misappropriation of veteran funds is a serious crime that has devastating consequences for those who are victimized. It is crucial that those who exploit vulnerable individuals, such as veterans, are held accountable for their actions.

Signal-Debose’s guilty plea serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the rights and interests of those who have served our country.
