A notorious New Orleans resident has been charged with a series of gun and drug offenses, further escalating the city’s already dire crime situation.
Eddie Harris, 38, was indicted on September 1, 2022, by a federal grand jury on three counts related to the alleged possession and distribution of cocaine, as well as the possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and the possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to the indictment, Harris could face a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment, up to a $1,000,000 fine, and at least three years of supervised release if convicted of Count 1, which involves the possession with intent to distribute a quantity of a substance containing a detectable amount of cocaine.
Additionally, Harris is facing a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years up to life imprisonment, which is to run consecutively to all other sentences, up to a $250,000 fine, and up to 5 years of supervised release if convicted of Count 2, which involves the possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
In Count 3, Harris is charged with the possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, a crime that carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 15 years, up to a $250,000 fine, and up to three years of supervised release.
Harris must also pay a mandatory special assessment fee of $100 for each conviction.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the nation.
The investigation was led by the New Orleans Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant United States Attorney David Berman handling the prosecution.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans emphasized that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
In a statement, Evans reiterated the importance of the PSN program in making neighborhoods safer for everyone.
