Former Deputy Fakes PPP Application, Faces Up to 5 Years in Prison
New Orleans, Louisiana – In a shocking turn of events, TIANNA HART, a 32-year-old former deputy with the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office, has been charged with making a false statement to the United States Small Business Administration in an application for Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) benefits.
According to the bill of information filed on February 15, 2022, in the Eastern District of Louisiana, HART knowingly and willfully made a false statement to obtain PPP benefits she submitted in May 2021. The exact nature of the false statement remains unclear.
As a result of her alleged actions, HART faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, a restitution order, a fine of up to $250,000, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans emphasized that a bill of information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Evans also commended the work of the United States Secret Service and the St. John’s Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Assistant United States Attorney Andre J. Lagarde is handling the prosecution of this case. HART’s current status and whereabouts are unknown at this time.
The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) is a federal initiative aimed at providing financial assistance to small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, cases of fraud and abuse have been reported, with some individuals and entities attempting to take advantage of the program for personal gain.
As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether HART will be found guilty of the charges levied against her. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in government programs, particularly those designed to provide relief to vulnerable populations.
