A 69-year-old Orleans Parish woman has been caught red-handed in a brazen scheme to scam the system, netting her over $61,000 in Social Security benefits to which she was not entitled.
Catherine Campbell Williams, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, pled guilty on May 31, 2022 to Theft of Government Funds, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 641.
According to court documents, Williams began collecting Social Security Administration benefits paid to a deceased relative in December 2010 and continued to do so through 2020. In total, she fraudulently received approximately $61,324 in Social Security Administration benefits to which she was not entitled.
Williams faces a maximum penalty of ten (10) years imprisonment, followed by up to three (3) years of supervised release, a fine of up to $250,000.00, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee. U.S. District Judge Greg G. Guidry set sentencing for August 30, 2022.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the Social Security Administration, Office of the Inspector General. The prosecution of this case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Carboni.
The case highlights the importance of vigilance in the administration of government benefits and the consequences of those who seek to exploit the system.
Williams’ actions not only defrauded the Social Security Administration but also undermined the trust that the public places in the system.
The prosecution of this case serves as a reminder that the U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to protect the public trust and bring those who commit fraud to justice.
