U.S. District Judge Cathy Ann Bencivengo emphasized the gravity of human trafficking, noting that Quevedo-Moncada’s actions were an “aggravated” crime due to his repeated failure to stop despite multiple opportunities.
The 23-year-old Quevedo-Moncada admitted picking up three undocumented migrants from Otay Mountain Wilderness and speeding away in a Border Patrol pursuit. The crash left one passenger dead and two critically injured, with one suffering severe injuries that required medical intervention before being stabilized.
Quevedo-Moncada’s car was traveling at speeds of up to 93 miles per hour on a curve with a 35 mph speed limit. Despite escaping the campground and attempting to flee from Border Patrol agents after the crash, he was eventually apprehended. He had been paid $2,000 to transport his passengers to Anaheim.
“This was an aggravated crime motivated by profit and committed with no regard for human life,” said U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman. “We will continue to hold unscrupulous human smugglers responsible.”
Grossman thanked the prosecution team, investigating agencies, and Border Patrol agents for their efforts in this case.
