A Johnston County Social Services worker has been sentenced to 6 months in prison for swiping over $100,000 in government food aid. Shermeca McCrary, a case worker, used her access to exploit SNAP accounts, netting herself $102,000 in taxpayer dollars. The brazen heist began in Johnston County, North Carolina.
McCrary’s scheme was uncovered by a joint investigation, led by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ethan Ontjes handled the prosecution.
The sentencing comes as part of a broader effort to combat government benefit fraud nationwide. U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle hailed the sentence as a victory for the President’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.
A Forfeiture Money Judgment of $102,000 has been levied against McCrary, who will also serve 3 years of supervised release.
