Socorro Meth Dealer Martinez Gets Five Years

SANTA FE, N.M. – Joel Martinez, 31, of Socorro, New Mexico, is headed to federal prison for five years. The sentence, handed down today in federal court, closes a case dating back to a 2015 bust that uncovered a significant methamphetamine operation. Martinez will also face four years of supervised release after completing his 60-month term.

The case began to unfold on August 26, 2015, when law enforcement officers, armed with a search warrant, descended on Martinez’s Socorro County residence. What they found wasn’t a simple stash; it was a full-blown operation. Authorities seized a staggering 392 grams of methamphetamine – nearly a pound – along with a disassembled firearm and the tools of the trade: drug paraphernalia. Martinez was immediately arrested on a criminal complaint charging him with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

A grand jury indictment followed on September 22, 2015, formalizing the charges against Martinez. He initially contested the charges, but ultimately, on June 10, 2016, he entered a guilty plea. In court, Martinez admitted to possessing the substantial quantity of methamphetamine with the clear intention of pushing it onto the streets of New Mexico.

The investigation was a coordinated effort, spearheaded by the Albuquerque office of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Crucially, the HIDTA Region I Narcotics Task Force played a vital role, pooling resources and manpower from multiple agencies. The Socorro Police Department also contributed significantly to the investigation, providing local expertise and support.

The HIDTA Region I Narcotics Task Force isn’t a standalone unit. It’s a powerful collaboration, drawing in the Albuquerque Police Department, the DEA, the Pojoaque Tribal Police Department, the Rio Rancho Police Department, the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office, and the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office. This multi-agency approach, funded by the federal High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program, is designed to maximize impact in critical drug trafficking regions.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Presiliano Torrez prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and subsequent sentencing of Martinez. The HIDTA program, established by the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988, provides vital funding and support to law enforcement agencies battling drug trafficking across the nation. This case serves as a stark reminder that those who profit from poisoning communities will face federal prosecution and substantial prison time.
