A Albuquerque tax preparer has been caught in a web of deceit, as Solomon Gbara, 47, of Albuquerque, pleaded guilty on December 13, 2023 in federal court to aiding and assisting in the preparation and presentation of false and fraudulent income tax returns.
Gbara, who owned and operated Express Tax SG, has been charged with preparing and presenting individual income tax returns (IRS Form 1040) that included claims he knew were false. From February 2015 through May 2020, Gbara assisted in the preparation of returns that included claims for dependents and Schedule C businesses to which the taxpayers were not entitled under the provisions of internal revenue laws.
The indictment and other court records reveal that Gbara also admitted to showing clients tax returns with certain expected refunds, then filing returns with higher refunds and pocketing the difference.
The fraudulent returns filed by Gbara represented a total loss of over $90,000 in tax revenues. Gbara faces up to three years in prison for each count. A sentencing date has not been scheduled.
The IRS Criminal Investigation investigated this case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy Peña prosecuting the case.
Gbara’s actions are a stark reminder of the importance of tax honesty and the severe consequences of tax crimes. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
As this case unfolds, the Grimy Times will provide updates on the sentencing and any other relevant developments.
