TRENTON, N.J. — A ruthless distributor from Somerset County, New Jersey has admitted to pushing a deadly mix of fentanyl and cocaine that led to the tragic demise of four individuals. Mauricio Gutierrez, 52, faced the music today in Trenton federal court, where he pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Zahid N. Quraishi.
According to a harrowing case file, Gutierrez’s sinister operations on June 22, 2022, resulted in the distribution of fentanyl that ultimately took four lives. His addiction to profit pushed him to continue his deadly trade even after learning of these deaths.
Gutierrez was caught with a cache of cocaine hidden in both his vehicle and home on September 27, 2023. He planned to distribute this substance at a later date, showing no remorse for the lives he had already destroyed.
The 52-year-old faces up to 80 years behind bars if convicted on all counts, each carrying a potential fine of over $1 million or twice his ill-gotten gains. Sentencing is set for January 13, 2026.
Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba commended the efforts of Homeland Security Investigations Newark and local law enforcement agencies in bringing Gutierrez to justice. The investigation is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative to dismantle criminal organizations and keep communities safe.
