LOS ANGELES – Kai Whitney Sommers, 36, of Ventura, is facing a new federal indictment, accused of returning to his predatory ways mere months after being released from state prison for previous child sex offenses. Sommers is charged in an 11-count indictment with producing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and coercing two minors into sex work, allegedly using online platforms to groom and exploit vulnerable victims.
The indictment details a disturbing pattern of behavior. In September 2021, Sommers was convicted in Los Angeles Superior Court of statutory rape and lewd acts with a minor, stemming from an incident where he enticed a minor on an online chat room to engage in prostitution. He then allegedly lured the victim to a meeting and sexually assaulted them. The system failed to keep this predator contained, and now, according to federal prosecutors, Sommers has allegedly escalated his crimes.
Just months after his release from prison in August 2023, law enforcement raided Sommers’ residence, allegedly uncovering CSAM. The investigation quickly expanded, revealing online communications where Sommers allegedly attempted to persuade two additional minors to enter the sex trade. The indictment alleges Sommers wasn’t just a facilitator; he actively manipulated the victims, instructing them to lie about their age – telling them to claim they were 18 – to potential clients.
The details are particularly gruesome. One of the victims allegedly created CSAM for Sommers, which he then used to advertise them online as adult sex workers. Sommers allegedly impersonated the victims during online interactions with potential clients. He is accused of coercing one victim into meeting with adult men on two separate occasions, netting a paltry $160 for the exploitation. This is not about money; it’s about control and abuse.
Sommers has been in federal custody since June 26 and is scheduled for arraignment on July 15 in United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles. He is charged with two counts of sex trafficking of minors, two counts of use of a facility of interstate commerce to entice a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity, one count of production of child pornography, three counts of distribution of child pornography, one count of possession of child pornography, and two counts of commission of a felony offense involving a minor while required to register as a sex offender.
If convicted on all counts, Sommers faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years in federal prison and a potential life sentence. The FBI and Ventura Police Department are leading the investigation, with Assistant United States Attorney Derek R. Flores of the Violent and Organized Crime Section handling the prosecution. An indictment is not a finding of guilt, and Sommers is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, but the allegations paint a horrifying picture of a repeat offender preying on vulnerable children.
