David James Massey, Social Security Disability account theft, Florida 2025

David James Massey, 39, of Pace, Florida, entered a guilty plea in federal court for the theft of government funds, a crime that authorities say he committed by siphoning off over $118,000 from his late mother’s Social Security Disability account. The United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, John P. Heekin, announced the plea.

Heekin emphasized the severity of the offense, stating that while SSDI benefits are meant to support elderly and disabled citizens, Massey used the funds to enrich himself. His office is dedicated to pursuing justice in such cases, ensuring that taxpayer dollars are protected and returned to their intended recipients.

Court documents reveal that Massey’s mother was a SSA Title II beneficiary whose benefits were deposited into a joint account with her son. After his mother’s death in 2019, Massey continued to receive and squander the funds for personal use. He failed to inform the SSA of his mother’s passing and transferred the money into various accounts.

The penalty for Massey’s crime is significant, with up to ten years’ imprisonment and a potential three-year term of supervised release if he violates the conditions of his parole. Additionally, under his plea agreement, he is required to repay all the funds he unlawfully obtained.

This case was investigated by the Office of the Inspector General at the SSA and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer H. Callahan. Sentencing is set for September 30, 2025, in Pensacola before Judge M. Casey Rodgers.
