MIAMI, FL – Nicholas James Sorgenfrey, 38, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, will spend the next 12 years behind bars after being sentenced for the sickening possession of child sexual abuse material. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon in Ft. Pierce, marks the culmination of a disturbing case that highlights the dark underbelly of online exploitation.
Federal investigators discovered Sorgenfrey, a previously convicted sex offender, had uploaded a trove of depraved content to his cell phone service provider’s cloud storage. The material wasn’t just stored; it was actively accumulating. An affidavit revealed the images and videos depicted prepubescent minors, a clear indication of deliberate and predatory behavior. This wasn’t a one-time lapse in judgment – it was a pattern of seeking out and possessing horrific material.
The investigation didn’t stop at the cloud. A search of Sorgenfrey’s residence confirmed the digital trail. He brazenly admitted to utilizing social media applications to actively seek out and acquire sexually explicit images and videos of children, including those who were preteen. A forensic examination of his phone unearthed multiple videos showing children engaged in sexually explicit acts, solidifying the evidence against him.
United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Markenzy Lapointe and acting Special Agent in Charge Maged Behnam of the FBI Miami field office jointly announced the sentence. This case is a stark reminder of the FBI’s unwavering commitment to dismantling networks of abuse and protecting the most vulnerable members of our society. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, demonstrating the power of interagency cooperation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Hudock skillfully prosecuted the case, presenting irrefutable evidence that led to the 12-year sentence. The prosecution’s focus was not simply on punishment, but on ensuring Sorgenfrey could no longer harm children. This sentencing sends a clear message: those who prey on children will be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice.
This case was pursued under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a national initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice. PSC is a comprehensive program designed to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, coordinating federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders, and to rescue victims.
