Violent Crime in South Bend: Kidnapping and Extortion

Brazier was found guilty of kidnapping and extortion, and was handed down a lengthy sentence by South Bend District Court Judge Robert Miller, Jr. The defendant will also spend 1 year under supervised release following his imprisonment.

According to documents filed in the case, Brazier, along with his codefendants Lindani Mzembe and Derek Fields, used firearms to confine and kidnap an individual, demanding a ransom for their release. Tragically, a firearm was discharged during the kidnapping, resulting in injury to the victim.

Mzembe and Fields, Brazier’s co-defendants, have also been convicted of various charges related to the crime. Mzembe is set to be sentenced on January 5, 2017, while Fields will receive his sentence on February 22, 2017.

The case was a result of a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the South Bend Police Department, and the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide.

Assistant United States Attorneys John M. Maciejczyk and Joel Gabrielse prosecuted the case, bringing the perpetrators to justice.
