SOUTH BEND – Kevin Pope, Jr., the 39-year-old South Bend native, stood before United States District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty this week, facing a heavy sentence for his role in the dark world of drug trafficking. The judge’s gavel dropped, sealing Pope’s fate: 66 months behind bars followed by three years of supervised release.
Pope’s guilty plea to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl was no surprise after the mountain of evidence against him. Records indicate that he had sold methamphetamine and fentanyl on five separate occasions in South Bend between October and November 2024. It was a lucrative trade, but Pope’s greed led to his downfall.
In December 2024, police executed a search warrant at Pope’s residence. The scene was grim. Authorities found over 30 grams of the potent drug fentanyl, a kilogram of methamphetamine pills, nearly 90 grams of cocaine, and a substantial amount of cash—over $22,000 to be exact. But that wasn’t all. They also discovered a loaded handgun, a silent witness to Pope’s criminal enterprise.
The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with valuable assistance from the South Bend Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Joel Gabrielse prosecuted the case with determination, ensuring justice would be served for the community and its residents.
Pope’s sentence sends a stern message to those who think they can profit from the destruction of lives through drug trafficking. His conviction and imprisonment serve as a stark reminder that such activities will not go unpunished.
