South Dakota Man Guilty of Morphine Distribution
A guilty verdict has been delivered in federal court for Alex Lee Salway, a 54-year-old man from Martin, South Dakota. On June 20, 2013, a federal jury in U.S. District Court found Salway guilty of two counts of Distribution of a Controlled Substance.
Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 40 years’ imprisonment, a $2,000,000 fine, or both. This severe punishment serves as a reminder of the gravity of Salway’s actions.
The charges against Salway stem from his involvement in selling and distributing morphine pills within 1,000 feet of a public elementary school in Martin on two separate occasions on January 27, 2012. This blatant disregard for the safety of children in the community is a disturbing revelation.
Salway was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 19, 2012, as part of Operation Prairie Pharm, a controlled substance investigation that led to the indictment of 12 individuals for drug distribution offenses in Bennett County.
The case was investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, the Martin Police Department, and the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura A. Shattuck successfully prosecuted the case.
A sentencing date has not been set for Salway, who remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshal. This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of drug trafficking on our communities and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions.
