South Florida Liquor Store Owner Guilty of Tax Evasion
A Lake Worth man has been found guilty of tax evasion in a stunning case that highlights the dangers of underreporting income. Ajay Kumar, 60, the sole officer and registered agent of Kruthi, Inc, and owner of Tri County Discount Liquor, pleaded guilty to tax evasion in federal district court in West Palm Beach.
Kumar’s scheme involved keeping records of his liquor store’s income in two separate retail point-of-sale systems. He reported the income from one of these systems to his accountant but failed to report the cash sales, which totaled approximately $557,268, on a separate stand-alone cash register.
As a result of Kumar’s actions, Kruthi’s return for tax year 2017 underreported the liquor store’s gross receipts. During the hearing in West Palm Beach before U.S. District Judge Donald M. Middlebrooks, Kumar admitted that he failed to report all his liquor store’s gross receipts and that he owed substantial income tax in addition to the amount declared on the 2017 tax return that he jointly filed with his wife.
Kumar’s actions have left many in the community reeling. ‘The defendant’s actions were a clear attempt to cheat the system and avoid paying his fair share of taxes,’ said Juan Antonio Gonzalez, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida.
Kumar faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison and will be sentenced on November 4 at 11:00 a.m. before Judge Middlebrooks. Assistant U. S. Attorney Marc Osborne is prosecuting this case.
The public is advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. ‘This case serves as a reminder that tax evasion will not be tolerated,’ said Acting Special Agent in Charge Matthew D. Line, IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), Miami Field Office.
