Southside Gang Member Gets 25 Years for Racketeering
HARRISBURG – A member of the notorious Southside gang in York, Pennsylvania, has been handed a 25-year sentence for his role in a racketeering conspiracy.
Richard Nolden, 30, of York, pleaded guilty to the charge in federal court today, bringing to an end a long and complex case that involved multiple defendants and several years of investigation.
According to United States Attorney Peter Smith, Nolden’s guilty plea is the culmination of a federal indictment that was returned in 2014, which charged 21 members of the Southside with racketeering and drug trafficking offenses.
The indictment identified the Southside as a criminal enterprise that used intimidation, violence, and threats to protect its territory and power, and to generate profits through open-air drug dealing and violent crime.
Nolden is currently serving a sentence of 15 to 40 years for the murder of Sherrod Snellings in 2012, and will begin serving his new sentence concurrently with that sentence.
The other defendants in the case, who went to trial or entered guilty pleas, are due to be sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Yvette Kane.
The maximum penalty for racketeering conspiracy is life imprisonment, but under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the judge is required to consider a range of factors, including the nature and seriousness of the offense, the defendant’s history and characteristics, and the need to punish and protect the public.
Nolden’s guilty plea brings to an end a long and complex case that has had a significant impact on the community in York, Pennsylvania.
The Southside gang has been linked to numerous crimes, including murder, assault, and drug trafficking, and its activities have had a devastating impact on the local community.
The case is a testament to the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat organized crime and bring those responsible to justice.
