Spalletta Charged with $50M Crypto Hack, Alabama 2023

A Maryland man is facing serious charges after allegedly hacking into a major cryptocurrency exchange and making off with over $50 million.
According to the Department of Justice, Jonathan Spalletta, a/k/a “Cthulhon,” a/k/a “Jspalletta,” was charged with computer fraud and money laundering in connection with his hacks of Uranium Finance (“Uranium”).
The indictment, unsealed in the Southern District of New York, alleges that Spalletta used his hacking skills to infiltrate Uranium’s systems and steal cryptocurrency worth over $50 million.
“The defendant’s alleged actions are a stark reminder of the growing threat of cybercrime in our financial systems,” said a DOJ spokesperson.
Spalletta, 36, of Maryland, faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the charges against him.
The case is being investigated by the Homeland Security Investigations (“HSI”) San Diego, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
Spalletta is expected to appear in court to face the charges against him.
The indictment is a significant blow to the cryptocurrency community, which has been plagued by hacking incidents and security breaches in recent years.
