BOSTON – In a gritty trial that spanned three days, Marcus Hicks, 43, of Springfield, Mass., was today convicted of drug trafficking, marking the culmination of a fierce legal battle.
Hicks stood accused of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of cocaine base (crack cocaine), and possession with intent to distribute marijuana. His fate was sealed as U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni set sentencing for January 27, 2026.
The grim details of Hicks’ November 21, 2022, escapade were recounted: he possessed 97 grams of cocaine, 15 grams of crack cocaine, and two and one-half pounds of marijuana, all intended for distribution on the streets of Springfield.
Each charge carries a severe penalty – up to 20 years in prison for cocaine and cocaine base, and up to five years for marijuana. The potential fines are equally daunting, reaching $1 million in each instance. Sentencing will be decided by the federal district court judge, adhering to the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.
Today’s announcement was a collaborative effort between United States Attorney Leah B. Foley, Special Agent Jarod A. Forget of the DEA New England Division, Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan, and Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers. Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd E. Newhouse is handling the prosecution.
