Burlington, VT – A federal indictment has hit Richard Bailey Jr., 34, of St. Albans, Vermont, with charges for illegal firearm possession. The grim revelation came as the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont revealed that a federal grand jury levied the charge against Bailey on August 28, 2025.
During an arraignment before Judge Kevin J. Doyle on September 8, 2025, Bailey entered a plea of not guilty. The court ordered his detention as the case progresses.
The story takes a darker turn to June 2, 2025, when St. Albans police were called to investigate a domestic violence incident involving Bailey. The trail led to Burlington, where officers spotted Bailey near the victim’s workplace. His escape led to a fateful moment: he discarded a loaded Sig Sauer pistol in his haste.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office stresses that an indictment is merely an accusation and that Bailey is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years behind bars. The final sentence will be decided by the District Court, guided by sentencing guidelines and factors.
Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher praised the efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and local law enforcement. Assistant United States Attorney Nate Burris is prosecuting the case, with defense handled by Assistant Federal Public Defender Barclay Johnson.
