Burlington, Vermont – Jorge Humberto Moreno Martinez, a 34-year-old Venezuelan national, faced a grueling legal battle after being sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment for illegal reentry into the United States and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. The sentence was handed down by Chief United States District Judge Christina Reiss on August 29, 2025.
Moreno’s illegal journey began in 2016 when he was removed from the U.S. following a three-and-a-half-year prison term for burglary in the second degree in New York. Despite being advised of the prohibition against re-entry due to his criminal history, Moreno defied the law and returned to the country.
Court records reveal a harrowing incident on January 27, 2025, when Moreno attempted to evade arrest by driving at speeds over 100 miles per hour in Williston, Vermont. His escape led to a high-speed chase that ended with him hitting three law enforcement vehicles and fleeing the scene with drugs discarded from his vehicle.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew C. Gilman led the prosecution, while Moreno was represented by Brooks G. McArthur, Esq. Acting United States Attorney Michael P. Drescher praised the investigative efforts of the Department of Homeland Security, highlighting the contributions of its Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) divisions, with DEA support.
This case is a part of Operation Take Back America, a national initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and safeguarding communities from violent crime. The initiative leverages the full resources of the Department of Justice through OCDETFs and PSN to streamline efforts against organized crime.
