ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Dillon James Surrett, a 33-year-old resident of Flat Rock, N.C., was handed down a sentence of 11 years in prison followed by two years of supervised release for illegal firearm possession, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced today. The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, Russ Ferguson, made the announcement, joined by Alicia Jones of the ATF Charlotte Field Division and Sheriff Lowell S. Griffin of the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office.
According to court records, Surrett had been previously convicted of a federal firearms violation and was legally prohibited from owning a firearm. On August 21, 2023, deputies executing an arrest warrant at Surrett’s residence observed a firearm upon his opening the door. A subsequent search uncovered four firearms, two with obliterated serial numbers, a short-barrel 12-gauge firearm, ammunition, drug paraphernalia, and substantial amounts of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and marijuana.
Surrett entered a guilty plea on November 25, 2024, to the charge of possession of a firearm by a felon. He is currently in federal custody and will be transferred to the Federal Bureau of Prisons upon the designation of a federal facility.
U.S. Attorney Ferguson commended the ATF and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office for their investigation into this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher S. Hess, from the Asheville office of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, handled the prosecution.
This sentence comes as a part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide DOJ initiative targeting illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime. The operation leverages resources from OCDETFs and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) to streamline efforts against organized crime.
