St. Croix Kingpin Kai James Gets 10 Years

ST. THOMAS, VI – Kai James, 37, of St. Croix, is headed to federal prison for a decade. Acting United States Attorney Adam F. Sleeper announced Tuesday that James received a 120-month sentence, followed by six years of supervised release, from District Judge Mark A. Kearney. The sentence stems from James’ central role in a sophisticated drug trafficking operation that flooded the streets – and the skies – with cocaine and marijuana.

James pleaded guilty back in January to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana. The investigation, dating back to January 2013, began with a seemingly innocuous discovery at the Golden Grove Correctional Facility: a smuggled iPhone belonging to inmate Joh Williams. Texts on the phone quickly revealed a network of drug distribution *inside* the prison, supplied by none other than James’ brother, Ivan James. The feds didn’t stop there. They secured authorization to monitor Williams’ calls, confirming the prison pipeline and exposing the wider operation.

This wasn’t just a prison hustle. The James gang had a brazen scheme to exploit vulnerabilities at the Henry Rohlsen Airport in St. Croix. Members with secured access were smuggling *kilograms* of cocaine per week onto commercial flights headed for the mainland United States. Testimony revealed that Kai James, acting as a manager, personally recruited as many as ten couriers to carry bricks of cocaine – two to three kilograms per trip – to New York, North Carolina, and Florida. A chilling level of organization for a serious crime.

Law enforcement didn’t just rely on surveillance and testimony. A raid on the James family home turned up a treasure trove of evidence: marijuana, cocaine, and a fully equipped marijuana cultivation operation. Agents seized over 1,000 marijuana plants from a field adjacent to the property, illustrating the sheer scale of the James’ criminal enterprise. This wasn’t a small-time operation; it was a full-blown drug business.

Kai James isn’t the only one facing consequences. His brother, Ivan James, already received a staggering 420-month sentence after being found guilty of drug conspiracy, possession of the massive marijuana crop, weapons charges, and even the death of Levar Pogson. Joh Williams received 90 months, while Ariel Petersen (93 months), Jahkiebo Joseph (68 months), and Malachi Benjamin (72 months) also pleaded guilty to firearms charges related to the conspiracy. Tillisa Ceaser and Luis Ortiz, Jr., both drug conspiracy defendants, received 62 and 60 months respectively. The James organization is crumbling.

“The members of this drug trafficking organization have been brought to justice,” Sleeper stated, rightly acknowledging the collaborative effort of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, Customs and Border Patrol, the Virgin Islands Police Department, and the Bureau of Corrections. The message is clear: move drugs through the Virgin Islands, and you *will* face federal prosecution and a lengthy prison sentence. This case serves as a stark warning to those involved in the dangerous and destructive drug trade.
