Remy St. Felix, Home Invasion, North Carolina 2023

GREENSBORO, NC – Remy St. Felix, 24, of West Palm Beach, Florida, has been found guilty by a federal jury in Greensboro, North Carolina, for his central role in a brutal, international conspiracy to terrorize U.S. citizens in their homes and steal their cryptocurrency. The verdict comes as the Justice Department continues to crack down on increasingly sophisticated and violent digital asset-related crimes.

According to evidence presented at trial, St. Felix led a crew responsible for a string of violent home invasions between September 2022 and July 2023. Targets weren’t chosen randomly; they were cryptocurrency holders specifically selected for their digital wealth. The crew struck in Durham, North Carolina, as well as Florida, Texas, and New York. Victims were held captive in their own homes, forced at gunpoint to access and drain their Bitcoin and other crypto accounts. The stakes weren’t just financial – they were life-threatening.

“St Felix and his co-conspirators targeted victims across the United States for brutal home invasions, kidnappings, and robberies in order to steal cryptocurrency,” stated Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri. “Although the members of this violent conspiracy tried to cover their tracks through encrypted communication and anonymous financial transactions, they were not beyond the reach of our dedicated investigators and prosecutors.” This conviction, the latest in a series of over a dozen in this case, sends a clear message: digital crime doesn’t mean you’re beyond the law.

The prosecution detailed a particularly harrowing incident from April 2023. St. Felix and an accomplice broke into a victim’s home, immediately assaulting and zip-tying the resident. Holding the victim at gunpoint and threatening their spouse, the crew oversaw the transfer of over $150,000 in cryptocurrency from the victim’s accounts. The operation wasn’t haphazard. Evidence showed St. Felix’s crew meticulously planned each attack, gaining unauthorized access to email accounts and conducting physical surveillance beforehand.

The stolen funds weren’t left in plain sight. The crew laundered the money using privacy-focused cryptocurrencies like Monero, along with “instant exchanges” and decentralized finance platforms that bypassed traditional “know-your-customer” checks. Communication was also carefully concealed, relying on encrypted messaging apps to discuss targets and money laundering schemes across both U.S. and international borders. The attempt to remain untraceable ultimately failed.

“Engaging in violence in the furtherance of stealing cryptocurrency, as Remy St Felix did, will not be tolerated,” said Executive Assistant Director Timothy Langan of the FBI’s Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch. Special Agent in Charge Robert M. DeWitt of the FBI Charlotte Field Office added, “The crimes committed by this ring of violent cryptocurrency thieves are shocking…This investigation is an outstanding example of what a local FBI field office can accomplish.” St. Felix was arrested in July 2023, as he was allegedly preparing for another home invasion. Sentencing details have not yet been released, but expect a substantial penalty for the leader of this ruthless operation.
