Darrin Craig Dahl, 43, of St. Maries, Idaho, is headed for a federal cell after pleading guilty today to possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine. The plea, entered in Coeur d’Alene federal court, caps a violent attempt to evade law enforcement and exposes a repeat offender now staring down a mandatory decade behind bars.
The case traces back to June 12, 2016, when Dahl was spotted driving erratically on U.S. Highway 95 in Benewah County. A deputy from the Benewah County Sheriff’s Office and an officer with the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police attempted a traffic stop — but Dahl slammed the brakes, bolted from his vehicle, and ran. He was quickly tackled and arrested, but not before officers found what they were really looking for: over 50 grams of methamphetamine stashed on his person.
Inside Dahl’s pockets and car, investigators uncovered the full toolkit of a distributor — digital scales, plastic baggies for portioning, and $4,000 in cash. As part of his plea agreement, Dahl agreed to forfeit the $4,000 as drug proceeds. He admitted the money came from prior sales, confirming his role not as a user, but as a supplier feeding the toxic flow of meth through North Idaho.
Dahl’s criminal past sealed his fate. He admitted to a 2014 drug conviction in Nez Perce County — a fact that triggers a sentencing enhancement under federal law. That prior conviction ratchets up the penalty from a standard drug charge to a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison, with the possibility of life. The maximum fine? $8,000,000. Supervised release after any sentence could last the rest of his life.
U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson made no apologies for the severity of the case. “This demonstrates why it is critically important that there be good communication between local and tribal law enforcement,” she said, crediting the joint effort between county, tribal, and federal agents. “Only by all law enforcement, state, county, tribal, city and federal working together can we do what we are charged to do — keep our communities safe.”
Sentencing is scheduled for April 25, 2017, before Senior U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge at the federal courthouse in Coeur d’Alene. The investigation was led by the Benewah County Sheriff’s Office, Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs Drug Enforcement Unit. Dahl remains in custody pending that hearing.
