John Wilson, 36, of Standish, Maine, pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Portland to the attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor, capping a two-year investigation into his predatory online behavior. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and up to three years of supervised release.
Court records reveal that in March 2022, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office began probing reports of a man using social media to engage in inappropriate conversations with at least two children. By June 2022, Wilson had escalated his conduct — exchanging sexually explicit messages with members of a watchdog group posing as underage girls. In one exchange, he believed he was communicating with an 11-year-old girl.
During that chat, Wilson sent photographs of his penis and live-streamed a video of himself masturbating. The interaction was captured as part of a coordinated law enforcement sting operation. Federal and local investigators say the evidence leaves no doubt about Wilson’s intent to sexually exploit a child.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. Wilson remains in custody pending sentencing, which will occur after the U.S. Probation Office completes a presentence investigation report. A federal district judge will determine the final sentence, weighing the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
Child sexual exploitation reports are surging nationwide. In 2021 alone, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline received 29.3 million reports — a 35% jump from 2020 and 73% from 2019. Reports of ‘Online Enticement of Children for Sexual Acts’ rose more than 130% from 2019 to 2021, while ‘Unsolicited Obscene Material Sent to a Child’ more than doubled.
This case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation. The program unites federal, state, and local agencies to track down offenders and rescue victims. For more information or to report suspected abuse, visit report.cybertip.org or justice.gov/psc.
