John Wilson, 36, of Standish, Maine, pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Portland to the attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor, admitting to explicit online conduct targeting children.
Court records reveal that in March 2022, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office began investigating after reports surfaced of an individual engaging in inappropriate online conversations with at least two minors via social media. The probe quickly zeroed in on Wilson, who escalated his actions by June of that year—initiating sexually explicit chats with undercover members of a child protection watchdog group posing as underage girls.
During one such exchange, Wilson sent photographs of his penis and live-streamed a video of himself masturbating to someone he believed was an 11-year-old girl. The interaction was part of a sting operation designed to identify and apprehend predators using digital platforms to exploit children.
Wilson now faces a maximum of 10 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, and up to three years of supervised release. Sentencing is pending the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office. A federal judge will determine the final sentence, weighing the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. It was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat the rising tide of child sexual exploitation. The program unites federal, state, and local law enforcement to identify, arrest, and prosecute offenders while rescuing victims.
According to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), reports of suspected child sexual exploitation to its CyberTipline soared to 29.3 million in 2021—a 35% jump from 2020 and 73% from 2019. Reports of ‘Online Enticement of Children for Sexual Acts’ increased more than 130% from 2019 to 2021, while ‘Unsolicited Obscene Material Sent to a Child’ rose 220%.
