Transporting Child Pornography Plagues Kentucky Community
Louisville, KY – In a shocking turn of events, former Larue County High School Principal Stephen Kyle Goodlett, 37, has pleaded guilty to transporting child pornography and possessing child pornography that had been transported in interstate commerce.
According to the plea agreement, Goodlett admitted to transferring images from phones confiscated from students to his personal thumb drive without their consent or knowledge and shared the images on a Russian website. The images included nude photographs of a 15-year-old female student who attended Larue County High School during Goodlett’s tenure as principal.
Goodlett’s arrest was the result of a child sexual exploitation complaint filed by the victim’s mother. Elizabethtown police received the complaint on September 2, 2016, and launched an investigation that ultimately led to Goodlett’s termination from his position as principal on October 19, 2016.
On October 13, 2016, the Kentucky State Police executed a search warrant at Goodlett’s Elizabethtown residence, seizing his iPhone and an external hard drive, which contained 60 files of child sexual exploitation. Further investigation revealed that Goodlett possessed 436 images and 11 videos of child pornography, defined by 18 USC Section 2256(8).
Goodlett faces a sentence of no less than five years in prison and no more than 40 years, with a fine of up to $500,000 and a period of supervised release of at least five years and up to a lifetime period of supervised release. His sentencing is scheduled for October 20, 2017, at 10:00am before U.S. District Judge David J. Hale.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney A. Spencer McKiness and is being investigated by the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Securities Investigations, with assistance from Kentucky State Police and the Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Police Department.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating child exploitation and abuse. The investigation and prosecution of Goodlett serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting our children from exploitation and abuse.
