Memphis, TN – A notorious Memphis kingpin has been brought to justice after a lengthy investigation. Stephen Ray Cook, 40, of Trenton, TN, was sentenced on Friday, February 15, 2013 to 360 months in federal prison for his role in masterminding a drug distribution ring that operated across the eastern United States.
According to court documents, Cook was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 18, 2011 and charged with one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute at least 1,000 kilograms of marijuana, and one count of possession with intent to distribute at least 500 grams of methamphetamine. He pleaded guilty to the marijuana conspiracy charge on January 12, 2012. The government agreed to dismiss the methamphetamine count.
Cook’s operation relied on a network of family members and acquaintances to assist him in trafficking marijuana from locations in Mexico to Memphis, Chicago, Atlanta, and other cities. The reach of Cook’s operation is a stark reminder of the complexity and scope of modern-day organized crime.
U.S. District Judge Samuel H. Mays, Jr. ordered Cook to serve five years of supervised release following his prison term. In the federal prison system, there is no parole.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bolivar Police Department, and the West Tennessee Drug Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jerry Kitchen represented the government in the case.
Cook’s sentencing marks a significant victory in the ongoing efforts to combat organized crime and disrupt the flow of illicit substances into our communities. As we continue to work towards a safer and more just society, we must remain vigilant in our pursuit of those who seek to exploit and harm others for personal gain.
