Fridley Man Sentenced for Robbing Discount Tobacco and Groceries

A brazen robbery at a Discount Tobacco and Groceries retail store in Fridley has resulted in a 46-year-old man being sentenced to prison. Steven Eugene Daniels, a resident of Fridley, was sentenced to 160 months in prison for interfering with commerce by robbery, a federal crime.

The crime took place on June 14, 2012, when Daniels and another man, armed with a firearm, entered the Discount Tobacco and Groceries store located at 315 Osborne Road Northeast in Fridley. The robbers forced the store clerk to open the cash register, and Daniels stole money from the register before fleeing the scene.

Daniels was later apprehended and indicted on September 11, 2012, on one count of interference with commerce by robbery pursuant to the Hobbs Act. He pleaded guilty on November 27, 2012, and admitted to his role in the crime.

The Hobbs Act, passed by Congress in 1946, provides for federal jurisdiction in cases involving violent, habitual criminals who commit armed robbery in businesses involved in interstate commerce.

The case was the result of an investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Anoka County Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard A. Newberry.

Daniels’ sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the impact it had on the community. The sentence also underscores the importance of holding violent offenders accountable for their actions.

The case highlights the need for law enforcement agencies to work together to combat violent crime and protect businesses and communities.
