Steven Flood, a 38-year-old man from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender.
According to court documents, Flood was convicted of a sex offense in federal court, which requires him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. However, between June 15, 2022, and August 4, 2022, Flood failed to register as required by federal law.
Flood was indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2022 and pleaded guilty to the charges on January 17, 2023. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on April 10, 2023.
As part of his sentence, Flood will also serve five years of supervised release and pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper prosecuting the case.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims.
Flood was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing.
