Local Man Accused of Cocaine Trafficking
A resident of Erie, Pennsylvania has been charged with a serious federal crime, according to recent reports from the office of Acting United States Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman.
The indictment, handed down by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh, names Steven Lamont Spearman, 52, as the sole defendant. According to the indictment, Spearman distributed more than twenty-eight grams of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of cocaine base on or about July 14, 2017.
This serious offense carries severe penalties, including a maximum total sentence of 40 years in prison, a fine of $5,000,000, or both. The actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Paul S. Sellers on behalf of the government. The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.
It is essential to note that an indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The outcome of this case is still pending, and it remains to be seen what the consequences will be for Spearman. If convicted, he will face the maximum sentence of 40 years in prison and a fine of $5,000,000.
