Local Man Admits to Recording Child Abuse

CAPE GIRARDEAU – A disturbing case of child abuse has come to light in Cape Girardeau, as 33-year-old Steven Lee Brown pleaded guilty to producing child pornography. Brown, a resident of Cape Girardeau, appeared in U.S. District Court on Thursday, where he admitted to recording his sexual abuse of a 10-year-old child.

According to court documents, the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office received a report of Brown’s abuse last May. The child was interviewed and confirmed the abuse, prompting officers to respond to Brown’s residence. During an interview, Brown admitted to engaging in various sexual acts with the child and using his cell phone to record some of the activity.

Officers seized Brown’s phone and discovered several sexually explicit images of the minor child on the device. At his plea hearing, Brown admitted to using his cell phone to produce the sexually explicit material. This shocking case highlights the devastating consequences of child abuse and the importance of reporting such crimes to the authorities.

The investigation into Brown’s crimes was led by the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI. Assistant United States Attorney Jack Koester is handling the prosecution for the government.

Brown’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 6, 2025, where he faces a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and a maximum sentence of 30 years. The community is left reeling from this disturbing case, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
