A Phenix City tax preparer has been indicted for her alleged involvement in a massive stolen identity refund fraud scheme, according to federal officials.
Teresa Floyd, owner of T & L Tax Service, was accused of obtaining personal identification information from unsuspecting individuals and using it to file fake income tax returns, authorities said.
According to the indictment, Floyd created fake identification documents and bills in the names of the victims to cover her tracks. The scheme allegedly netted her $320,397 in fraudulent refunds.
Floyd faces up to 20 years in prison for each of the several counts of wire fraud and a mandatory two-year sentence for the aggravated identity theft charges.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and Floyd is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case was investigated by special agents of the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, with Trial Attorney Michael Boteler of the Tax Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Brown for the Middle District of Alabama prosecuting the case.
Floyd’s alleged scheme was exposed after a lengthy investigation, and authorities are now warning citizens to be vigilant when sharing personal identification information with tax preparers.
