ROMEROVILLE, MS – A harrowing chapter in the ongoing battle against gun violence came to a close this week as Romelo Walker, 27, of Jackson, Mississippi, was sentenced on Monday, June 23rd, to 103 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. This sentence will be served consecutively to his current state sentence of 11 years for armed robbery.
According to court documents, Walker came into the crosshairs of Capitol Police on August 9, 2024, when he was found with a firearm in Hinds County. The scene unfolded when officers attempted to stop Walker’s vehicle during a traffic stop, only to have him flee at high speeds through the neighborhood. After a harrowing foot chase, Walker was apprehended.
Walker’s criminal history is no secret. He has previous state convictions for armed robbery and domestic violence as recently as 2022. As a convicted felon, he is strictly forbidden by federal law from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition.
The case against Walker began to unfold on November 6, 2024, when he was indicted by a federal grand jury. On February 24, 2025, he pleaded guilty to the charges against him.
Acting U.S. Attorney Patrick A. Lemon of the Southern District of Mississippi and Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson of the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives were among those who made the announcement of Walker’s sentence. The ATF played a pivotal role in the investigation, with assistance from the Capitol Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney C. Brett Grantham prosecuted the case, which is part of Operation Take Back America, an aggressive nationwide initiative aimed at eliminating transnational criminal organizations and protecting communities from violent crime. This operation leverages the full resources of the Department of Justice, including the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
