Sanders, 57, from Belton, Missouri, was found guilty of Travel with Intent to Engage in Illicit Sexual Conduct, Sexual Abuse of a Minor in Indian Country, Abusive Sexual Contact with a Minor in Indian Country, Tampering with Evidence by Corrupt Persuasion, Coercion and Enticement of a Minor, and Production of Child Pornography.

U.S. District Judge Sara E. Hill imposed the sentence, which also includes lifetime supervision upon release. Sanders will be required to register as a sex offender.

Sanders’ predatory behavior began with messaging a former 6th-grade student through social media, escalating to inappropriate sexual conversations and coercion. He convinced the minor child to send explicit photos and even purchased items like lingerie and a ring with his initials for her.

According to court records, Sanders, who previously taught special education and coached both boys’ and girls’ teams, infiltrated the child’s life by claiming to be a tutor and befriending the family. He attended school events and visited the child during school hours.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol apprehended Sanders after a parent reported him for suspicious behavior. They found alcohol and sex toys in his vehicle, confirming his pursuit of the minor child.

U.S. Attorneys Alicia Hockenbury and Valeria Luster prosecuted this case, which was part of Project Safe Childhood, the Department of Justice’s initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
