SCRANTON, PA – Thurman Stanley, 40, of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, has confessed to running a depraved interstate operation involving the exploitation of women and the distribution of dangerous narcotics. Stanley pleaded guilty on March 27, 2017, before Senior U.S. District Court Judge James M. Munley to three counts of transporting women across state lines for the purpose of prostitution and one count of trafficking in heroin, “molly,” and crack cocaine.
According to United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler, Stanley’s criminal enterprise spanned from December 2013 to December 2015. During this period, the predator transported at least four women from Pennsylvania to New York, Iowa, and North Dakota, forcing them into the brutal world of prostitution. He didn’t stop there, also supplying these vulnerable victims with heroin, “molly,” and crack cocaine, further cementing his callous disregard for human life.
The feds are seeking serious punishment for Stanley’s crimes. He now faces a potential sentence of up to 50 years behind bars and a staggering fine approaching $2 million. Judge Munley has ordered a pre-sentence report to delve deeper into Stanley’s background and the full extent of his depravity before handing down a final judgment.
The bust was the result of a coordinated investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, bolstered by the Pennsylvania State Police, Monroe County Detectives, and law enforcement in Bismarck, North Dakota. The multi-agency effort successfully dismantled Stanley’s operation and brought him to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa is spearheading the prosecution.
Each of the prostitution charges carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment, followed by a term of supervised release, and a hefty fine. The drug trafficking charge carries an even steeper maximum sentence of 20 years, also with supervised release and a fine. However, Judge Munley will consider a range of factors, including the severity of the crimes, Stanley’s criminal history, and the need for both punishment and potential rehabilitation.
Sentencing is currently scheduled for June 28, 2017. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available. This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the dark underbelly of interstate crime and the tireless work of law enforcement to protect the vulnerable. # # #
