Sun Prairie Man Sentenced for Illegally Possessing Firearms and Ammunition
MADISON, WIS. – Javaris Nunn, 33, a convicted felon from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for illegally possessing firearms and ammunition.
Nunn pleaded guilty to the charge on March 26, 2025, after being stopped by law enforcement on December 28, 2023. During the traffic stop, officers found a backpack containing two handguns – a Glock 42 .380 caliber handgun and a loaded Smith & Wesson M&P .45 caliber handgun – with the serial number scratched off.
While Nunn initially denied any knowledge of the handguns, forensic evidence revealed that his DNA was found on both guns. The Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory conducted the DNA analysis.
Nunn’s prior felony convictions include theft from a person, felon in possession of a firearm, and robbery. As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from legally possessing firearms or ammunition. The sentence imposed by Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson will run concurrently with a state revocation sentence and includes three years of supervised release.
Nunn’s case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a U.S. Justice Department program aimed at reducing violent crime. The PSN approach emphasizes collaboration between state and federal prosecutors and law enforcement agencies to address gun-related crimes, particularly those committed by felons.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan prosecuted the case, which was the result of an investigation conducted by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and the ATF Madison Crime Gun Task Force. The Task Force comprises federal agents from ATF and Task Force Officers from state and local agencies representing the Western District of Wisconsin.
U.S. Attorney Timothy M. O’Shea announced Nunn’s sentencing, citing the significance of the case in addressing gun-related crimes in the region. The sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences for those who choose to disregard the law and engage in illegal activities.
